Lead 1832 James Audubon Letter to Richard Harlan
Description
Header: Audubon, J. J. Description: Autograph letter signed to Richard Harlan, Charleston 12 June 1832, 1 p., 4+0, laid into Christies Catalog for the auction dated April 24, 1992 and on October 29, 1993 Mrs. Daniel W. Evans sold her Audubon collection. This letter was one of the items that the Evans family decided to keep prior to the 1993 auction. Accompanying the letter and also laid into the 1992 catalog is Christies pre-catalog inventory list in which this letter is listed as the 5th lot. About Plate 86 "Black Warrior", Audubon said, "Long before I discovered this fine Hawk, I was anxious to have an opportunity of honouring some new species of the feathered tribe with the name of my excellent friend Dr. Richard Harlan of Philadelphia. This I might have done sooner, had I not waited until a species should occur, which in its size and importance should bear some proportion to my gratitude toward that learned and accomplished friend."
